Billing Using SPM vs Medicare’s 8-Minute Rule
Via Webinar Only - Recording of session available to those that cannot attend the live session.
Description
Many practices believe the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) creates the CPT codes and defines how much time must be provided of a time-based CPT code to bill that code to an insurer. In reality, it’s the American Medical Association (AMA) that creates and owns the CPT codes. In this session, you will learn the difference between substantial portion methodology and Medicare’s “8 minute rule” and how each one impacts the number of units that you can bill.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Define substantial portion methodology (SPM) of a time-based CPT code
- Describe CMS’ “8-minute rule”
- Understand how to bill the correct number of time-based units using SPM or the 8-minute rule
