Description:
This comprehensive course has been designed to build on the concepts learned in the “Fundamentals of Perioperative Nursing” course to provide Registered Nurses a thorough introduction to perioperative nursing. It focuses on fine-tuning skills in patient assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making needed for the nurse to provide safe care for the surgical patient.
Objectives: Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify components of a preoperative nursing assessment and other activities required to prepare patients for surgery
- Apply critical thinking to effectively assist anesthesia during perioperative care of the patient
- Demonstrate managing levels of care, preparing patients for discharge, and employing critical thinking skills to ensure patient safety and recovery in the post-operative period
- Perform basic scrub nurse duties such as: scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up the mayo stand and back table, and assisting the surgeon
- Demonstrate knowledge of specific case types through practice of mock procedures focused on set up, equipment needs, positioning devices, prepping, and draping
