Learning Objectives

August 4 (Introduction to Vestibular System and BPPV)

1.       Identify anatomical structures and functions of the peripheral and central vestibular system

2.       Understand and identify nystagmus, including how it is defined (named) and its presentation in BPPV

3.       Articulate the underlying mechanisms of BPPV and be able to recognize clinical signs and symptoms consistent with BPPV.

4.       Identify likely PT diagnosis given video presentation of infrared goggle examination

5.       Recognize best-practice maneuvers necessary to treat posterior, anterior and horizontal canal canalithiasis and cupulothiasis

6.       Design appropriate treatment plan for BPPV using clinical practice guidelines and ongoing assessments

Augus 11th (Pathophysiology and Evaluation of Unilateral and Bilateral Vestibular Dysfunction Outside of BPPV)

1.       Understand and identify nystagmus outside of the context of BPPV (variability in peripheral vs. central disorders)

2.       Demonstrate understanding of bedside vestibular exam; appreciate implications of examination results both individually and collectively

3.       Develop a systematic approach to the physical therapy examination of the patient with vestibular pathology including need for referrals and/or specialized equipment

4.       Understand the significance of the SCC push-pull membership in the context of normal and abnormal function

5.       Define and understand the function of all vestibular (VOR, VSR, VCR) and cervical reflexes (COR, CCR, CSR)

6.       Understand common etiologies of UVL and BVL and differentiate between acute and chronic UVL

7.       Given a case scenario, determine appropriate examination tools and interpret findings of those tools

8.       Compare and contrast clinical presentation, expected examination findings, intervention approach in persons with UVL/BVL

9.       Compare and contrast a variety of balance/fall/dizziness tool assessments including clinically relevant and psychometric properties

Augus 18th: Treatment Design for Unilateral and Bilateral Vestibular Dysfunction and Special Populations

Given a case scenario, apply guiding principles and prioritize HEP prescription for individuals with UVL vs. BVL

Differentiate between vestibular adaptation, substitution, compensatory approaches when designing a physical therapy plan of care

Recognize common medications administered to persons with vestibular pathologies including the implications for the physical therapy examination and treatment.

Synthesize examination findings to develop a comprehensive intervention program utilizing current best practices based on available literature

Appreciate available evidence pertaining to physical therapy practice in special populations with vestibular dysfunction (migraine, CNS disorders)

Given a case study, participants will be able to design an intervention strategy to address vestibular and balance dysfunction, including choosing appropriate outcome measures

August. 25th: Evaluation and Treatment for Concussion; Introduction to  Cervicogenic Disorders

1.       Understand the pathophysiology, related sequela and functional impact of concussion

2.       Identify vestibular and visual system abnormalities and their respective influence on recovery post-concussion

3.       Identify appropriate evaluation tools for individuals following concussion; incorporate the results into treatment planning, prognosticating, and goal-writing

4.       Learn to distinguish cervicogenic etiologies of dizziness from other pathologies

5.       Given a case study, learners will develop an appropriate assessment and intervention plan
